First Life Coming First

Image
January 2, 2015   The new year has started well -- organized and productive, just as I envisioned.  The trick will be maintaining this newly established routine.  The routine of which I speak is one that allows me to use Second Life and Inworldz and other virtual worlds as vehicles for doing my first life work, one that gives me the freedom to be inworld as needed and not when not.    In virtual worlds, I am learning to say no rather more quickly than I am inclined to say yes.  That is a lesson I learned ages ago in my first life.  I figured somewhere along about 1987 that it is much easier to say no and then change one's mind than to say yes and have to renig on promises made.    For some reason, that reality was not immediately apparent to me in virtual settings.  Maybe it's because what we do in virtual worlds is ALWAYS optional, so saying yes to requests for my time, talent, and input seemed not quite so real as...

New Year, New Habit: Let's Get The Job Done Together

Image
New Year, New Habit (Quiet Write-in) It is so easy to let our eyes stray from the ball.  For me, the ball is writing.  For lots of you, it is too.  Let's start 2015 off productively.  New Year, New Habit will be a month-long event that will allow us time and space for writing together daily in supportive silence.  If it works for a number of people, we'll run it again in February.  I will be in my office daily at 4:30 a.m. slt and will stay until 6:30.  I'll spend that two hours writing and will be glad to have you join me daily or whenever you can.   Feel free to IM here or inworld with questions.

Getting The Job Done

Image
Image from WT at www.openclipart.org There are days when I wonder why I call myself a writer.  It seems I spend so much of my time on the other parts of my job that writing is the least of it.  It's easy to get sucked into the editing, proofreading, recording things I've written, making illustrations, doing the PR necessary to sell my work, meeting and talking with other writers, blogging about writing (ironic I should mention that one here, huh?), book layout, planning work sessions-- well, you get it -- the list of writing-related tasks that distract from actual writing is about a paragraph long.  Lately,   I have  had a string of days where writing has gotten short-shrift, if it has happened at all.    There are also times when my whole writing life is derailed by some mundane thing, like a holiday (when people are home and in my space and when I am expected not to work) or a doctor's appointment (which is supposed to take an hou...
